Our Round Rock OBGYNs would like patients to know that we can help them learn more about their fertility and family building potential. We offer fertility evaluations and infertility tests that can provide you with answers and reassurances.
Many patients wonder when they should talk to our Round Rock OBGYNs about their fertility. First of all, any time you have a concern, please ask about it. Guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists clarify when to seek out advice about infertility.
- You have had regular sexual intercourse without using birth control for one year and have not become pregnant.
- At age 35 or older, you have had regular sexual intercourse unprotected by birth control for six months without becoming pregnant.
- You have an irregular menstrual cycle.
- You and/or your partner already know that you have a fertility issue.
Basic infertility tests
One of the most basic fertility tests involves checking to determine whether or not a woman is ovulating. There are 3 basic fertility tests to verify this reproductive function.
Basal body temperature tracking The patient tracks her temperature daily over the course of several months, and she will notice a slight rise in her basal body temperature when she ovulates.
Urine test for the presence of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the urine The presence of this hormone signals that an egg has been released.
Progesterone test We draw blood during the menstrual cycle and check for the level of the hormone progesterone. If progesterone is present at an increased level, it indicates that ovulation has occurred.
Our Round Rock OBGYNs may also suggest hormone fertility testing. These tests simply involve a blood draw. The thyroid function test evaluates the hormones that control your thyroid gland. Tests may also determine the level of the hormone prolactin in your blood since ovulation may be disrupted if your prolactin levels are too high.
Fertility tests also allow our Round Rock OBGYNs to look at a patient’s reproductive organs to determine if they are healthy and functioning properly. These imaging tests include a sonohysterography, a test that uses transvaginal ultrasound, combined with a saline solution that is injected into the uterus to fill it, to look for endometrial polyps and fibroids.
A hysterosalpingogram uses X-ray technology to determine whether or not the fallopian tubes are open.
Often, if our physicians do see a problem, they will follow up with a hysteroscopy. This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure during which our OBGYN inserts an instrument call a hysteroscope through the cervix into the uterus to both diagnose and treat problems, such as fibroids or adhesions, they may find inside the uterine cavity.
If a patient has had other types of infertility tests that indicate problems, our physicians may decide to perform a laparoscopy. During this surgical procedure, the physician uses a laparoscope, a lighted instrument, which is inserted into the pelvic cavity through a small incision in the abdomen. Surgical instruments can also be used during laparoscopy to correct problems.
