First Prenatal Visit

Our Round Rock OBGYNs initiate care with a comprehensive first prenatal visit

You’re pregnant—congratulations from our Round Rock OBGYNs and our staff. Now it’s time to begin taking care of yourself and your baby with regular prenatal care. It all begins with your first prenatal visit. This is usually your longest pregnancy appointment, so allow more time in your schedule.

Your medical history is very important at the first prenatal visit

Your medical history and your family medical history provide extremely important information for our Round Rock OBGYNs; these details help them administer the best care during your pregnancy. During your first prenatal visit, be prepared to provide us with a variety of information.

  • The date of your last period and your menstrual history
  • Information about past pregnancies
  • Your international travel
  • Health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes or sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Medical history—previous surgeries or medical conditions
  • Medications you are taking, including supplements and over-the-counter medications
  • Lifestyle issues—smoking, alcohol and drug use
  • Fitness issues—how much and how often you exercise and the type of exercise you prefer
  • Work environment issues—heavy lifting or work around chemical
  • Mental health issues—any mental health issues you are currently dealing with or have dealt with, and your stress levels
  • Your family health history—illnesses or diseases in members of your family

All of these issues create a complete picture for our physicians on your first prenatal visit and help us devise a personalized care plan for your pregnancy.

Blood testing at the first prenatal visit

Your first prenatal visit is the time when we perform several prenatal blood tests.

  • We determine your blood type as well as your Rh, or Rhesus factor, status.
  • We check your blood counts.
  • If necessary, we test to see if you have immunity to rubella or chickenpox viruses.
  • We also test for hepatitis B, HIV and STIs such as syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia.

We also obtain a urine sample during your first prenatal visit.

In addition to testing, our Round Rock OBGYNs will perform a physical exam, checking blood pressure, height, weight and an examination of the vagina, cervix and uterus.

Get your pregnancy off to a great start with a comprehensive first prenatal visit with our Round Rock OBGYNs
